Moe and AJ

Moe and AJ are two young Morgans beginning their education with me. In 30 days I will bring them through the phases of learning manners, understanding pressure and hopefully getting them greenbroke to ride so their family can continue on with their training this spring. I look forward to working with these lovely horses and helping them through the beginnings of their new journey.

AJ is the palomino mare. She is very attached to Moe, a smokey dun gelding. Both just turned 3 years old.

AJ seems nervous, worried. But she has settled in to barn life a little easier then Moe.

Today will be their 3rd lesson in manners.

  2. Today was Moe's day to shine. After almost knocking me over on the way to the arena, he exploded into a fit of apprehension. He had no idea what was going on. The arena was apparently the scariest place he had ever been to. :)

Today was the day for fireworks. He reared, he bolted, he ran at me. To be expected. I worked on teaching him to respect my space...but giving me space with out running away. He pawed, he whinnied, he shook his head... and slowly, as we worked, his eyes started to blink, he was licking and chewing, understanding..he lowered his head..and when the lesson was over, he understood the difference between being polite and being in my space. He began to listen and understand what I was teaching him.

As we were leaving the arena, he tried to bolt through the aisle way. I sent him back before he could go past me. His head came up high and his ears touched the tarp above him. It scared him so bad, he didn't want to come back out. Because I gave him some tools to help him understand what was being asked of him, I used them to help him trust me on leaving the arena. It took time, but when it was all said and done, he calmly and confidently left the arena, stood there and inspected the floor, touched the lockers with his nose, smelled the floor and realized he could do this no problem.

    Good job today Moe!

AJ was perfect today. I worked on helping her relax and just stand still. She was quiet and relaxed by the end of it. She is very insecure and has a very hard time staying focused. She is having a hard time not worrying. But she follows wonderfully. She may need more reassurance then Moe needs. I could tell though that she was very proud of herself when we were finished. :) (I also worked on her understanding that putting her nose on my head was not a good idea..lol)

  3. I literally sacked both horses out. I used the empty grain sack to get them used to all the scary things that may come their way.

AJ is so high strung, she takes much longer to relax. Moe is a champ, I think he will be the steady eddie of the two.

Tomorrow I will introduce saddle blankets...

  4. Got through both of their manes today. Cleaned them up well and they stood relaxed and calmly for all of it. Worked on separation anxiety today and made some really great progress. Both horses are coming along nicely. AJ is really surprising me with how quickly she has become brave and respectful. They were able to play together for several hours as a reward. AJ is also becoming a champ with catching.
